Yamaha F250 4Stroke


Yamaha unleashes its biggest four-stroke outboard so far - the mighty F250A, which is based on the popular F225A but a whole bunch of refinements to improve power and fuel-efficiency

Yamaha showcased its new 250hp four-stroke engine to a group of marine media in September. The engine rounds out a full range of four-strokes from 2.5-250hp, including the recently-released and extraordinarily fuel-efficient 50, 60, 80, and 100hp four-strokes designed for small to medium-sized trailerboats. The four-stroke range compliments Yamaha's ever-popular two-stroke range, which is renowned for reliability and ease of servicing, and also includes the high-pressure direct-injection V-Max series from 150-300hp.

Of interest to small-boat owners is a new tiller handle, which is available for small- to mid-sized trailerboats. The tiller arm allows the operator to set trolling speed using a simple dial, anywhere from 600-1000rpm, and comes with electric start, throttle tension, power trim and tilt and gearshift functions at your fingertips. Combined with the extra length and ergonomic design, the new tiller arm makes controlling larger outboards easier than ever before. And it can be retrofitted to recent-model Yamaha outboards for just a few hundred dollars.

TOP GUN
The big news on the day, however, was the big 250hp four-stroke. The F250A houses a 3.3lt V6 powerhead with 24 valve DOHC technology delivering 250hp at the propshaft. The engine is based on the same 3.3lt powerhead from the F225A but boasts new single-belt driven Variable Camshaft Timing and 24 valve DOHC engine technologies to produce more low- to mid-range torque, outstanding fuel efficiency and exceptionally low exhaust emission levels, Yamaha claims.

Mounted on three different boats, the effect of the variable valve timing on the F250 could be felt immediately, with immense torque and pick-up being generated in the upper end of the rev range between 4000-6000rpm. Variable Camshaft Timing both increases and decreases the camshaft timing according to the engine rpm to increase the intake and exhaust efficiency throughout the low to mid range rpm band.

RELIABLITY
For additional strength and durability, the F250A features lightweight forged pistons and a heat-treated crankshaft and connecting rods. Yamaha opted for a single-belt drive with less moving parts, multi-point fuel injection for optimum all-weather operation and a high-output 46amp alternator to power all your boat's electrical systems.

Clean and fuel efficient operation is achieved through a blow-by gas re-burning system which removes any unburned fuel and sends it back to the combustion chamber. Quiet operation is also delivered by the large intake silencer and the noise-suppressing labyrinth exhaust system. Such refined engineering reduces exhaust emissions to CARB three-star levels. At all speeds, normal conversation could be had at the helm on all the boats - it really is a very smooth, quiet engine.

COMPUTER-CONTROLLED
Yamaha's sophisticated Electronic Control Module (ECM) is the driving intelligence behind the F250A. The electronically-controlled single throttle valve system - a first for Yamaha - enables precise control over the air intake, which is directed smoothly into each combustion chamber for greater power. The ECM receives input from nine sensors located around the engine and warns the operator of any impending problems. Should any sensors fail, Yamaha's Fail Safe System keeps the engine running. Concerns of engine temperature, amp output, and oil pressure should now be non existent, Yamaha says.

To make maintenance easier, a front-mounted freshwater flushing port offers convenient engine flushing without turning the key. Reliability and longevity is also enhanced with Yamaha's five-stage multiple coating over YDC-30 aluminium, more stainless steel componets, zinc sacrificial anodes, a super-tight cowling and the flushing system help to protect against corrosion.

PERFORMANCE
An engine each was mounted on a 7.4m plate aluminium AMM fishing boat, Cruise Craft's 685 Outsider and a Whittley 700 Sea Legend. The 250 had loads of power, particularly in the bottom and top end of the rpm range. It was also remarkably quiet for such a large engine.

The F250 pushed the big Cruise Craft out to 80kmh at 5900rpm, using 80lt/h of fuel. Backed off, a sea-keeping cruise of 42kmh was achieved at 3500 using just 26lt/h of fuel - excellent efficiency for blue-water long-hauling and of high importance considering rising petrol prices.

Yamaha F350 4Stroke




Yamaha's big gun – the F350 5.3 litre V8 outboard – delivers huge torque and offers owners of large offshore boats an irresistible advantage: lots more fish-fighting space in the cockpit. Even better, it comes with sophisticated manners.

The F350 was displayed at a number of New Zealand boat shows during 2007, but the first opportunity to see it in action came at a media launch in Australia late last year. And to get straight to the point, it is a remarkable engine.

It delivers everything implied in the 350hp/V8 description – oodles of torque and deep, gut-wrenching acceleration (a 45 per cent increase in thrust over a conventional 250hp four-stroke outboard). What’s missing is the V8 rumble: it's a remarkably quiet, smooth engine, free of any expected vibration. Boating journos glanced backwards on a number of occasions as we coasted to a stop – "whoops – the engine's just died."

It’s also equipped with a fascinating array of engineering innovations (it received the prestigious IBEX 2007 Award for Innovation late last year) that deliver performance, surprising fuel efficiency and the promise of hours of trouble-free running.

Apart from the space advantages in opting for an outboard on a large offshore boat (in place of the more conventional inboards with shafts or stern legs), there is also a substantial weight benefit – not only versus inboard engines, but also twin-rig outboards. Consider that the F350 weighs in at around 365kg – compared with the 440kg of twin Yamaha 150s (220kg each).

First Yamaha Outboard Turns 50



This year, the very first Yamaha outboard celebrates its 50th anniversary. In March 2010, the company produced its nine millionth outboard. Now, 50 years on from that very first
outboard, Yamaha offers over a thousand different model variants. The story began in 1960 with the introduction of that first outboard model, the revolutionary 7 hp Yamaha P-7.

It took 36 years before total production reached the 5 millionth unit milestone, which was achieved in March of 1996 and 10 years later in October 2006, the total reached 8 million units. However, production of the next million Yamaha outboards, to the figure of 9 million, has been achieved in just over 3 years.

Currently, Yamaha outboards are produced at five factories in Japan, France and Brazil.

“Every aspect of manufacture is painstakingly controlled - from materials and machining, heat treatment, painting and assembly, all the way through to quality assessment and testing. It’s how we build the Yamaha reputation for matchless performance and absolute reliability into each and every product,” a company statement reads.

The Japanese company recently introduced new production technologies at the Fukuroi South factory, the increased use of super-accurate robotic machines on the paint line and a more efficient ‘modular’ production system. Other innovations include the increased use of natural light for working as well as the installation of a water recycling system.

the statement further adds

6. Forgetting to Check the Oil

What It Does: Oh, yeah, boaters neglect this all the time. Checking the oil is necessary every time you use your boat. Non-use of boats can cause seals and gaskets to fail as they dry out. This can accelerate oil leaks.

Result Of Neglect: Going to sea with a twoquart oil shortage can damage valves, rocker bearings or cranks — and very quickly at the high rpm ranges where boats run.

Solution: The easiest way is to send your engine to local authorized dealer for checking and ask them to use only Yamalube Outboard Oil.

Penalty: Lose a power head or engine block and shell out $10,000 or more.


7. Running on a Damaged, Out-of-Balance Prop

What It Does: Props turn the energy of the engine into propulsion by pushing and pulling on the water. When they are undamaged, they spin smoothly with no vibration.

Result Of Neglect: Ding, dent or knick one badly enough and it will vibrate even though it may still push the boat. You may or may not be able to feel the vibration, but it will cause shaft “cancer,” shake the shaft, erode the seals and maybe even damage bearings and gears.

Solution: Do not use Non Genuine Propeller as it will not last long. Replace only with a Genuine Yamaha propeller. Repairing the prop is another optional.

Penalty: Keep on spinning that damaged wheel and plan to buy a new gear case and a prop to boot



8. Running the Battery Down

What It Does: Batteries are made to burn while starting the engine and running lights, engine electronics, marine electronics and stereos, but most batteries are destroyed at the dock during storage. Keep an automatic charger on the batteries to keep them fresh.

Result Of Neglect: Batteries that should last three years won’t last one year if you fully discharge them even a few times a season.

Solution: Replace with a new battery or recharge your old battery to keep it fresh and conditioned. Plug it in whenever your boat is in storage to keep it topped off.

Penalty: Don’t condition-charge and you’ll buy a new battery every season. Keep batteries charged and save the cost of the charger over three years — and end those embarrassing moments at the dock.


9. Not Flushing Salt Water from the Engines

What It Does: Many engines take in cooling water from the sea. The water works great. There is a ready supply of it, but it’s corrosive.

Result Of Neglect: If you leave that salty water in the engine when you store your boat, it can corrode and block the engine’s cooling jackets, destroying it.

Solution: Free! Yamaha technicians say one of the biggest causes of engine failure is failing to hook up a garden hose to the engine and flush it with fresh water.

Penalty: Buy a new outboard!


10. Forgetting to Service the Water Pump Regularly

What It Does: The pump impeller is made of a flexible, rubber-like material that degrades over time. Changing it ensures water flow, but equally important, changing it regularly ensures that the screws that hold the gear-case housing together do not corrode and lock tight.

Result Of Neglect: The most obvious and immediate effect is an overheating engine, which will at best end your boating day, and at worst burn up your engine.

Solution: DO NOT use non-genuine Yamaha impeller as it only waste your money. Replace broken impeller only with Genuine Yamaha Outboard impeller which is long lasting. DO NOT use non-genuine

Penalty: Even if the water pressure gauge indicates all is well on a threeyear- old pump, those screws might be welding the gear case together. If they do, you’ll replace the gear case for thousands, not hundreds, of dollars.

Guide Of Maintaining Your Yamaha Outboard Engine Part I



Here are the most common boater screw-ups that consistently cause a fistful of trouble — money trouble. It’s too bad, really, because a little forethought and preparation can make boating trouble-free and economical.

1. Not Using a Proper Outboard 2 Stroke or 4 Stroke Oil

What It Does: Most of ordinary outboard users are using 2 Stroke/4 Stroke motorcycle oil for their engines. However, ordinary motorcycle oil does not work efficiently in outboard engine. In terms of weight, rpm, area obstacles, etc. Motorcycle is meant for land transportation with 2 passengers only.It can run above 5,500 rpm.

However, outboard engine is meant for water transportation with more than 2 passengers and runs againts the seawaves. It runs to the maximum of 5,500rpm. Hence, ordinary motorcycle oil will not maintain your outboard engine condition and performance.

Result Neglect: You may have problem with engine crank components. The engine will not perform to its maximum power. It may cost you more by using motrocycle oil

Solution: Get a Yamalube Outboard Oil from your local dealer. Indeed, You will save alot when using Yamalube Outboard 2 Stroke Oil as it 1L oil:50L gasoline mixing, comparing to motorcyle oil wich is only 1:20

Penalty: Changing the engine crank components is expensive


2. Not Changing Gear-Case Lube

What It Does: Changing gear-case lube regularly — usually every 100 hours and again for winterization — maintains optimal lubricity and also gives a heads-up on developing problems, such as leaking seals or eroding gears.

Result Of Neglect: Moisture and condensation can erode lubricity and damage gears. Worse, you might not discover leaking seals in time to save the gear case from catastrophic failure.

Solution: You can use Yamaha Outboard Gear Oil which is produced exclusive for outboard engine.

Penalty: A new gear case can cost as much as $5,000.


3. Failing to Inspect or Change Fuel/Water Separators (You do have a 10-micron fuel/water separator between your tank and engine, right?)

What It Does: Fuel/water separators remove moisture from fuel before it gets to the engine. Outboard water separators have a “sight glass” in the bottom to allow inspection for water without draining them through the petcock on the bottom.

Solution: Water vapor collects in gas and travels to the engine, where, because it isn’t compressible and combustible like fuel vapor is, it can blow rings out of the pistons or cause piston rod and/or crankshaft failure.

Penalty: You’re usually looking at a new power head or engine block. It willl cost you alot.


4. Neglecting to Change Spark Plugs

What It Does: Spark plugs ignite the fuel air mixture in the fuel when they’re clean, properly gapped and serviceable.

Result Of Neglect: Spark-plug contacts (electrodes) erode over time — especially in outboards. As the gap widens with use, the spark plug fails to ignite the fuel-air mix, resulting in fouling. Fuel economy and performance suffer first, but if a bad plug remains, sooting can destroy the engine.

Solution: Use Genuine Yamaha Spark plugs which is developed for outboard engine. Changing them requires only a socket wrench and 10 minutes

Penalty: An outboard power head can cost $6,000 to $10,000.



5. Seldom service the engine

What It Does: Servicing is very important in maintaining your engine life. Just like us, human being, need to have medical check up regularly to stay healthy

Result Of Neglect: Engine may not run when you need it, or stall in the middle of the trip. Undamaged components may get broken as the result of the damaged components.

Solution: Send your engine for servicing to your local authorized Yamaha Marine Dealer regularly. Authorized Yamaha marine dealer will examined and replace the damaged parts with Genuine parts to keep your engine long lasting.

Penalty: You know the feeling when your engine stop running in the middle of the trip, right?? As it says, it costs you more to replace the parts if it is heavy damaged rather than doing regular service.

The Yamaha F225 four-stroke was a treat to drive on every application we tested -- there were twin engine offshore boats, bayboats, walleye boats and more. But our guys were captivated by thesleek Hurricane Sundeck 237 with 225 horses lunging at the mooringlines. Wait, is a 225 going to giveit the performance a family-hauling, tube-pulling funcruiser wouldget from a big V-8 inboard?

After driving it, we thought so.Plus, all that space dedicated to the inboard engine is nowdedicated to inboard fun. How would you like to add 12 square feetof party space to your deck? We thought so, too.

And quiet? We heard wind and rushingwater, little else. At idle, a peek at the tach was required to see if the engine was running. At the dock, we confess, somebody tried to restart an already running engine -- three times. A motor this quiet can’t be running. It needs a warning signal forre-start dummies -- ''Hey idiot! I’m alreadyrunning!''

The beauty of the F225 comes fromits elegant design. Yamaha engineers didn’t exactly break the rules in an exercise of civil disobedience. They occupied new territory.

To trim down its size they made it a 60-degree V-6 block. But the big deal in both size and power was the clever way they fed air and fuel to this double-overhead cam engine. On auto engines, the air intake is on the center of the V, taking up a huge (huge by outboard standards) amount of space.Yamaha put the air intakes on the outside, sweeping the air supply through intake silencers forward on the engine to the intake valveson the back.

They had another trick up their sleeve. Each intake tube gets it own fuel injector located just before the intake valve. The result? Extremely efficient air and fuel mixture for a clean, powerful burn -- and even more compactdesign.

To crown this unique achievement, the exhaust was taken from the center of the cylinder banks, in the V -- exactly the opposite of your automobile’s four-stroke engine -- and swept efficiently down and out through the propeller.

So, what did we find in our testdrive that stats can’t tell you? First, all those who said they’d never make a big block four-stroke outboard that a boat could carry were wrong. This boat sat level and true in the water. The hole-shot of tested boats showed no sign of a tail-heavy boat. Indeed all rigs were balanced. Know why? The F225 weighs nearly 300 pounds less than the nearest likely stern-drive alternative -- a 4.3L 210hp unit -- and a scant 100 pounds more than competitive two-stroke DFI 225hp outboards.

We also noticed the power in this engine was equally applied across the operating range. There were no dead spots, no wasted rpm. For each 500-rpm increase, there was a commensurate increase in torque and speed.

There is only one word to describe this engine, AWESOME!!!!
